The Shelbyville Horse Show

At the last horse show before the World Championships, nerves run high at the Shelbyville Horse Show. People from all over the state and even further come together for four nights of horses, music, fashion, people, food and so much more. Shelbyville's very own "Derby-esque" event, we have our own celebrities such as William Shatner. He is known to show up at the event, and I was lucky enough to attend opening night, last night, and the host of the new Lifetime show, "How to Look Good Naked" Carson Kressley was in attendance last night with a whole entourage of people along with him. Carson was also most recently a judge on our own CW's show "Crowned".

The Shelbyville Horse Show runs tonight through Saturday, Aug. 2. The Horse Show starts at 7 p.m. each night held at the Shelbyville Fairgrounds. Hope to see you there!

American Idol Auditions

Okay...so I know American Idol is a Fox Network show, but I am not here to promote the show, I simply would like to share with everyone my experience at American Idol Auditions yesterday.

Schedule for the day:
3:30- Wake up
4:30- Waiting in stand still traffic on Watterson
5:00- Arrive at Fair and Expo Center and wait in a line that seemed to be a mile long
7:00- We are now able to enter Freedom Hall and are told to leave outside our outside food, umbrella, and blankets, the items we were told we were allowed to bring initially. Leaving my Coach umbrella at the front entrance of Freedom Hall is not an easy task, especially since I knew it would get stolen as soon as the first person left the auditions....and it did.
8:00- Everyone has filled the arena and we now begin filming little saying like" Welcome to Louisville" and "Getting Lucky in Kentucky"...yeah....
10:30- The auditions finally begin with people on the lower floor and they work their way around the lower level. The audition consists of groups of 4 going up to a producer or two in a section and singing only about 10 seconds of your song.
1:30- Becoming a little bit restless, I have taken several uncomfortable naps at this point, and become a little delusional and start to read the "Readers Digest" I packed along, all the while becoming light headed and shaky from lack of food since I had breakfast at 4 this morning.
3:00- You really only can hear some many versions of Whitney Houston songs before you go a little nuts.
5:00- My section is finally called down and I am put into a group of 3 others and as we step up in front of the judges the first girl is told she sang too soft, the second person is a guy and he is told he should have sang something in English( he sang an Italian opera...bad choice) and the girl next to me is told she should have sang a girl song (she sang Frank Sinatra) and I sing Bonnie Raitt's "Something to Talk About". I am told I had a strong voice and had good song choices, but just "not what they are looking for".

A very long day, an incredible experience, but one I will never do again. I really would have beaten myself up if I didn't go to the auditions, especially since they were right here, but I am not like the other people who auditioned with me, I can't sing any louder, any more feminine, and you can't really get anymore American than Bonnie Raitt. I already did what I could do, I really can't change what they are looking for, or how I appear to them. I am not sure if the other thousands of people that were there will realize this or if they will go to the next audition site and try again, just like I heard some many already planning to do as we walked out the hall of shame.Here is a picture of the people filing in. This is not even half of the people there.

ACL Fan Fest

Who Will Be Next On Top?

Held at French Lick Resort & Casino this past weekend, our Casting Call for America’s Next Top Model was modelicious!!! More than 150 women from the area came up to see if they had what it takes to be ANTM. As it turns out, many of them did which will make the final selection very difficult. As personable as she is beautiful, The CW Louisville’s local winner, Seema Sheth, more than wowed the judges. We were fortunate to have her on our morning show this week (7/28) where she signed our cafe's signature wall and worked out details regarding the trip she won and other CW promos and events! Her application and video from the casting call, as well as the rest of the contestants’, will be sent to the West Coast for further review by Tyra and the gang. Lost a Camera?

I found a really neat website yesterday. If you have lost a camera on a road trip or while you were just having a night on the town, you may be in luck. A blog entitled "Found Cameras and Orphan Pictures" is a place where you can search for your lost camera. If anyone finds a camera they email four pictures found on the camera to this website and they post the pictures and where the camera was found. I loved the idea of being reunited with pictures that some may think are gone for good. The pictures on this website aren't just fun friend photos, there are wedding pictures, family portraits and unique travel landmarks. You may even recognize someone you know and help them get back their pictures. A camera may be a replaceable item, but the photos they contain are moments in your life you can't recreate.

America's Next Top Model Casting Call

Do you have what it takes to be America's Next Top Model? Well you don't have to answer that, just come to our Casting Call for Cycle 12 of America's Next Top Model at French Lick Resort and Casino on July 12th from 11 AM to 6 PM to show us what you got. You have to be at least 5'7" in height (so I guess that counts me out) and between the ages of 18 and 27. You don't have to have any prior experience in modeling.

Bring your completed application (which you can download off our website) and three pictures of yourself and your driver's license or passport and social security card or birth certificate.

We had another great show on the CW Live this Morning, every Monday thru Friday at 9:30! We had appearances from Cabo Wabo's Glenn Smith, LEO's Editor Stephen George, Larry Powers from White Castle and Jeff Miller from Miller Mowing. Yesterday Patrick, one of the other interns, and I got a chance to do a story at Kentucky Kingdom and we even got to ride the Ferris Wheel to end our story. Very cool! Be on the look out for more information on when that story will air.I will leave you with this picture of the interns(Patrick, Ellie and Me) in front of the station. We decided we needed a photo shoot to encourage other college students to do internships because internships at the CW are so much fun!

We had an exciting visit today from the Indianapolis Colts Choreographer, April Smith. She came to promote the Indianapolis Colts Fan Fest being at 4th Street Tonight with autographs from the cheerleaders and players.

Also a concert from Jon McLaughlin starting at 5 p.m. So Go out to 4th Street tonight and party with the Colts.

I was lucky enough to get a picture with April before she went on the air. I will say I was quite jealous of her bling-bling Super Bowl ring she wore to the show.

Remember...4th Street tonight....you might even see Peyton. And you still have two days to get your Father his father's day present. I wouldn't suggest a tie.

Cuban Cuisine In St. Matt's?

Havana Rumba
My co-worker, Erica (a.k.a. Thursday's CW LIVE "Castle Queen" - yes, I dine with queens these days), and I were wanting to try a new restaurant in Louisville and, because we had fallen behind in our pact to have a lunch date each week, we decided to have dinner last Friday evening after work. She suggested Havana Rumba as she had only heard about it so I cluelessly agreed to hit it up. Here's what we found:

Atmosphere:
Upon entering, I noticed there were only about four tables for outdoor seating with the rest of the seating indoor (no bother to us, it was steaming outside). We arrived around 6:30 and, to our stomachs' approval, were seated right away. Warmly-washed walls, natural lighting from the shaded windows and candlelight on each table provided an inviting and comfortable setting.

Menu:
Thankfully Hector brought us out a basket of good ol' white bread with a zesty, garlic butter to curb our hunger pains. Erica and I quickly decided on our drinks and appetizer for which we chose Tostones con Pollo; this involved "green, fried plantains topped with Monteray Jack cheese, grilled chicken and salsa fresca." The plantains resembled the flavor of a potato, which may sound odd to those who know a plantain to taste sweet, however, because they cook it with green (not yet ripened) plantains the consistency is thicker and more neutral. With the cheese, grilled chicken, and salsa fresca atop, this Havana Rumba created a tasty, zero-calorie (I wish) appetizer to pair with the wonderful drink selection!
More quickly than expected our meals arrived: Ropa Vieja for me and Fricase de Pollo for Erica.

Ropa Vieja involves shredded steak cooked with bell peppers, onions and olives in a Creole tomato and wine sauce and served with rice, black beans and sweet plantains.

My entree had the look and texture of shredded b.b.q. I greatly enjoyed the marinade of the steak's sauce; it was sweet and the tomato Creole did not overpower the flavor (I have a love-hate relationship with tomatoes - fresh, cooked, sauced). Additionally, the black beans were exceptionally good, as I expected them to be bland and flavorless, and the plantains, always a delight, were a great match for this meal. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a fresh spin on the traditional, American BBQ.

Fricase de Pollo is made with boneless chicken, potatoes and carrots slow cooked in a wine, tomato creole sauce and served with rice, black beans & sweet plantains.

Appetizers, Entrees, Desserts, Drinks

Looking to stay on track?
While it seems to me that Cuban cuisine, according to H.R., involves pretty hefty meals, the venue does offer items for those who are looking for a lighter option. They have a fair selection of salads, grilled chicken and fish, vegetarian items, soup of the day and more. Because I was mostly interested in getting the full experience (no pun intended) of H.R.'s Cuban cuisine, I chose against the path of light (aka - a salad).

Service:
Hector provided us with excellent service by humoring us and being timely with water, drinks, and orders. We experienced nothing but the best service - only there when you need it.

Bang for your Buck?
The servings were so large that I invited Hector, our waiter, to have a seat and join us. I'm not quite sure what Erica and I were thinking when we ordered an appetizer, two full meals, and drinks, (with a derailed action-plan of having dessert, too). In the future, we plan split everything (appetizer, entree, dessert) but drinks.

Overall, I enjoyed my experience and look forward to dining again with Havana Rumba.

The Opening Reception was Thursday, formally presenting, the opening of the new exhibit which will be open through August 23rd. Urban and Underwood Rock Rupp

A couple of my co-workers were messing with me because I told them I was going to a country-music concert this past weekend. Now I won’t lie, country is not the genre I typically jam to in my car, but who wouldn’t want to see Carrie Underwood, and the oh-so-handsome, tan, and Australian Keith Urban? Lexington’s Rupp Arena hosted the last night of the “Love, Pain & the whole crazy Carnival Ride” tour this past Saturday and it was packed up to the very top seats (which is where my $10 tickets sat me).

Carrie Underwood got the show started and her vocal skill was surprising, reminding me of a country version of Christian Aguilera, whose voice has been said to be the queen of my time. She sang her latest hits (well, they could all be described as her latest since she’s so new) and those that have topped the charts, including the one with the lyrics “I dug my keys into the side of his pretty, little, suped up, four-wheel drive, carved my name into his leather seats…” I might have sung that one a few too many times. Now, on to main event…

Like Underwood, Keith Urban began with a few of his newer songs that neither I, nor my friend, Rachel, knew, and then eased into his better-known songs. With my thoughts about and belief in LOVE changing as quickly as the stock market, his music, although reminiscent of great times, hit an interesting chord. But no matter how many swaying couples surrounded us, we couldn’t help but bounce to and sing his light-hearted lyrics.

One of the highlights of the show was when he invited Leslie, a teenager from Hazard, KY, on stage. Her friends held signs with “KEITH, LET HER PLAY YOUR GUITAR!” written across and an arrow pointing to her. Urban read them aloud and beckoned her and, after putting his red electric around her neck, let HER LEAD. He sang along as thousands of fans witnessed an amazing, on-stage, mini, jam session. Lastly, after two and a half hours of playing and a couple encores, Keith finished the evening with a song dedicated to his wife, Nicole Kidman. He sang his newest song “Everybody needs somebody, sometimes” which I’m guessing, based on the tears that rolled down his cheeks, was written for his wife. I can’t lie, I began to well up, and instantly fell for him. Other than the fact that he’s married to Nicole, has a baby on the way, and famous, I think I have a shot.

The Great Balloon Rush-Hour Race
If you are up to getting out and about at such an early hour then float over to the Kentucky Exposition Center to watch this beautiful race. It’s scheduled to begin at 7am and admission is free with a Pegasus Pin and parking for $5.

Balloon Glow @ Kentucky Exposition Center
The registered participants of the Great Balloon Race will be firing it up at 9pm tomorrow night to an accompaniment of music. Held at the Kentucky Exposition Center the balloons will be stationed at the actual spot of their launch for the following morning’s race. Just bring your Pegasus Pin and $5 for parking. F.A.T. Friday Trolley Hop
How often do you get a chance to be chauffeured around Louisville for FREE? That’s right. For no cost, you and your buddies can sit back and relax as you ride through Historic Frankfort Avenue. Jump aboard at any participating location to explore some of Louisville’s highly acclaimed dining, shopping, and entertainment for F.A.T. Friday. There are about 14 venues participating for tomorrow night’s hop which includes art galleries, art sales, wine tasting, Derby hats, silent auctions, and tarot card readings! Waterfront Wednesdays
Tonight is the first concert of the Waterfront Concert series. Typically these are held on the LAST Wednesday of each month, but due to Derby events next week, it has been pushed forward a week. Tonight’s bill is as follows: The Whigs, Wild Sweet Orange and Griffin House. Just cruise over to Louisville’s Harbor Lawn anytime after 5:00p.m. Remember not to bring pets, outside alcohol, or glass bottles. Can’t wait to see you there!

Hello CW viewers!
Whether by accident or out of curiosity, you have just arrived at my blog. Welcome! I am about to begin a new journey into the world of blogging. Please join (and bear with) me as I strive to Experience Louisville. Now, I can’t promise that everything I say, do, and experience will be focused on Louisville, sometimes I might have to explore other towns and events such as the Chocolate Festival in Washington, KY (happening April 19-20), or the International Bar-B-Q Fest in Owensboro, KY (May 9-10), but the majority of my ventures will take place in The ‘Ville. Some of you may know that I am actually quite familiar with the area, however, my experiences in Louisville and knowledge of all that our city offers is quite slim (as I have been out of the area for the past few years). My hope for this blog is to venture out and learn new things about our city and share them with you!
